FSC, PLA, and Kraft Paper: Sustainable To-Go Packaging Finally Explained Clearly

"Sustainable" is on almost every package today. But what does that actually mean? FSC, PLA, compostable, recyclable – it quickly sounds like an alphabet soup that no one can understand anymore. But it's not complicated at all. And if you can honestly explain to your guests why your packaging is better, you have a strong argument that many competitors don't have.

So, roll up your sleeves, here comes the plain truth – no eco-preaching, just the facts you really need.

FSC – the seal for honest paper

FSC stands for wood and paper from responsible forestry. Simply put: For every tree felled for your cardboard, it is ensured that the forest remains a forest. If your pizza boxes or bags bear the FSC seal, you can tell your guests with a clear conscience that the paper does not come from unsustainable logging. This is not an empty phrase, but controlled.

Kraft paper – strong and honest

Kraft paper is that strong, often brown paper that is known from good bags and wraps. The name actually comes from the "kraft" process, which makes the fibers particularly tear-resistant. It is stable, looks natural, and is easily recyclable. The slightly rustic look fits perfectly with a kitchen that relies on fresh, authentic ingredients.

PLA – coating without petroleum

Now for the part that often causes confusion. Cardboard alone becomes soggy with sauce and oil. To prevent this, a coating is needed. Traditionally, this was plastic. PLA is the better alternative: a coating made from plant-based raw materials, such as corn starch, instead of petroleum. Your container can thus withstand hot pasta or juicy salad – but on a plant-based basis.

Recyclable, compostable – what's the difference?

• Recyclable means: The material can be reused, usually via paper recycling – as long as it is not completely soaked with food residues.
• Compostable means: It can decompose into compost under the right conditions, without leaving microplastics.

A little practical tip: A slightly soiled pizza box usually belongs in the paper recycling, a heavily greased one rather in the organic waste or residual waste – the rules differ depending on the municipality. Feel free to tell your guests how to dispose of your packaging correctly. That appears competent and honest.

Sustainability is no longer a "nice to have" today, but a real reason why guests choose a store. If your packaging is food-safe, plastic-free, and made from renewable raw materials, then show it.
