Packaging lasts long if stored dry and dark. The two biggest enemies are moisture and direct sunlight—both happen faster than expected in food service businesses.
Moisture
Cardboard and paper absorb moisture. If they do so over a longer period, they lose stability and become soft. A pizza box that stood for months in a damp cellar will later bend once a hot pizza is inside.
So don’t place the boxes directly on a cold concrete floor, but on a pallet or shelf board. Keep some distance from the outer wall, especially in cool rooms and cellars. And keep the outer packaging closed as long as you don’t need it.
Sunlight
Direct sunlight fades print colors. After one to two months on the window, you can see the difference compared to a fresh box—the colors look paler. With a logo in your brand color, this becomes unpleasantly noticeable once old and new stock are side by side.
Therefore: don’t leave it permanently in the display window or in the sun. A dark storage room is the simplest solution.
Temperature and odors
Cardboard doesn’t like strong temperature fluctuations because condensation forms. Storage that heats up in summer and cools down sharply at night is less ideal than a consistently cool room.
And one point many don’t think about: cardboard absorbs odors. Don’t store it next to cleaning agents, paints, or frying oil. What the cardboard absorbs, your guest will later smell on the food.
In short
Store dry, not directly on the floor.
No longer than one to two months in direct sunlight.
Consistent temperature instead of strong fluctuations.
Keep away from anything with a strong smell.
